KOSEN JUDO INTERNATIONAL
Kosen Judo is a modern martial art that is derived from the traditional roots of where Kodokan Judo was born. We seek not to travel in the footsteps of masters of old, but instead seek what they sought. As such Kosen Judo is not a snapshot in time of how things are done, but instead an interpretation of what Judo could be with the knowledge we now have access to.
Kosen Judo uses the following kanji to describe the art:
Ko ? Old; Ancient
Sen ? Combat; Battle; Fight
Ju ? Soft; Flexible; Gentle
Do ? Way; Path; Method
Therefore Kosen Judo translates to us as the Old Combat method of the Gentle Way. What this means is that the skills and tactics which are taught in Kosen Judo must be able to be applied in real situations as well as be a safe way to practice.
The name was based on a similar pronunciation of Kosen Judo (????, K?sen J?d?) which was a variation of the Kodokan judo competitive ruleset that was developed and flourished at the k?t? senmon gakk? (??????) (k?sen (??)) technical colleges in Japan in the first half of the twentieth century. Kosen judo's rules allow for greater emphasis of ne-waza (??, ground techniques) than typically takes place in competitive judo and it is sometimes regarded as a distinct style of judo.
Kosen Judo International (KJI) has combined this concept and included the knowledge from other systems, just as the Founder of Kodokan Judo, Jigoro Kano originally did many years before. Systems that have so far influenced the development of KJI include: Kodokan Judo, Freestyle Wrestling, Greco Roman Wrestling, Sumo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Luta Livre, Jujutsu, Shuai Jiao and Sambo. With the ongoing search for more technical knowledge from other systems that will fit into the tactical and strategic model and conceptual direction of Kosen Judo.
